AZUSA, KAIJI, FUJI-KAIYU
The Limited Express AZUSA connects Shinjuku in Tokyo with Matsumoto in Nagano, offering a comfortable and scenic journey through the mountains of central Japan. The Limited Express KAIJI operates between Shinjuku and Kōfu, providing convenient access to the hot spring resorts and vineyards of Yamanashi Prefecture. The Limited Express FUJI EXCURSION runs directly from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko, linking central Tokyo with the Mt. Fuji area without the need for transfers.All three services are operated with modern E353 series train set, featuring comfortable seating, wide panoramic windows, and a smooth ride through the Chūō Line.
Kawaguchiko, Isawa-Onsen, Kōfu, and Matsumoto are among the most popular destinations along these routes, known for their relaxing hot springs, historic towns, and magnificent views of Mt. Fuji and the Japanese Alps.

Seat types
- All seats are reserved.
- If you hold a unreserved seat ticket, you may sit in any unoccupied seat. Please give up the seat if a passenger with a reserved seat ticket arrives.
- The AZUSA and KAIJI trains are operated with 9-car or 12-car formations, while the FUJI EXCURSION runs with a 3-car formation.
1st class
Cars 9 is 1st class, called “Green Cars.” All seats are reserved. They feature a 2+2 seating layout, offering comfort even on long journeys. The seat pitch and seat width are larger than those in 2nd class.
2nd class
All cars (excluding Car 9) are 2nd class, with a 2+2 seating layout.
Stops
- The stops of the trains vary depending on the train.
- ▲ indicates stations where only some trains stop.
- Most trains depart from and arrive at Shinjuku Station. Some trains operate to and from Tokyo Station. There is one round-trip service each to and from Chiba and Hakuba.
- The FUJI EXCURSION is coupled with the AZUSA or KAIJI up to Ōtsuki.

- Children aged 6 to under 12 pay half of the adult fare for 2nd class seats. Children under 6 travel free, but a child fare is required if a seat is reserved.
- The following fares are standard fares. During busy seasons, an additional ¥400 applies. During off-peak seasons, ¥200 is discounted.
- Although 2nd class also offers unreserved seat tickets, the fare is the same as for reserved seats. With a unreserved seat ticket, you may use any vacant seat, but you must give it up if the passenger who reserved that seat arrives. Since trains are crowded throughout the day, it is recommended to purchase a reserved seat ticket.

Seat reservation lamp
A seat lamp is installed above each 2nd class seat. A red light indicates that the seat is unoccupied. Passengers with a non-reserved seat can may use seats with a red light. As the train approaches the reserved section, the light will turn yellow. When this happens, please move to another seat with a red light.

TOKYO

Otsuki is a gateway to Mt. Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes area. It’s where travelers transfer between the JR Chūō Line and the Fujikyuko Line bound for Kawaguchiko.
ISAWA-ONSEN
Isawa-Onsen is one of Yamanashi’s most famous hot spring resorts. Visitors can enjoy relaxing baths surrounded by vineyards and local wineries producing Koshu wine.
KOFU
Kōfu, the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture, is known for its scenic mountain views, crystal gemstones, and rich samurai history connected to Takeda Shingen.
KAWAGUCHIKO
Kawaguchiko offers one of the most iconic views of Mt. Fuji. The area features scenic lake cruises, ropeways, and seasonal flower festivals.
KAMI-SUWA
Kami-Suwa is a lakeside hot spring town on Lake Suwa, famous for its waterfront open-air baths, sake breweries, and beautiful mountain scenery.
MATSUMOTO
Matsumoto is home to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most beautiful original castles. The city blends historic charm with easy access to the Japanese Alps.
HAKUBA
Hakuba is a world-class ski resort area surrounded by the Japanese Alps. It’s popular year-round for outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and mountain biking.
Important Notes
- Holidays in May, August, and December are extremely crowded.
- The AZUSA is crowded throughout the day. When traveling between SHINJUKU and KOFU, it is recommended to take the KAIJI instead of the AZUSA for a more comfortable journey.
- The FUJI EXCURSION is also a very popular service. It is highly recommended to purchase your tickets as early as possible.
